Stray Animals Matter (SAM) is a state-licensed, non-profit cat rescue dedicated to reducing the number of homeless cats in southwest Missouri. We hope to achieve this by assisting our community with Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) services for feral cats and have expanded our services to include a rehabilitation-to-adoption and sheltering program.
We work with animal controls in multiple cities between Springfield and Joplin, MO to take in trapped or surrendered cats for which these organizations do not have the resources. Since most of our local animal controls can handle dogs but rarely work with cats, SAM focuses on this underserved population. As such, we do not have adoptable dogs and we do not accept dog surrenders or transfers, though we are happy to refer you to another organization which can help.
We do accept owner-surrendered cats or kittens from our service area (between Springfield and Joplin). We place priority on very young, very old, ill, or abandoned cats, and can ONLY accept surrenders if we have space. We are no-kill, meaning that we never euthanize cats just because we are full. We also do not euthanize cats just because they have treatable conditions (including upper respiratory infections, ringworm, FIV, or treatable parasites). If we are unable to accept a cat you wish to surrender or report as found/abandoned, we are happy to provide assistance in vetting them if you are able to foster, or help direct you to other rescue organizations which may have space.

We are a 501(c)(3) organization that runs strictly on the generosity of donors, sponsors, and volunteers, and cannot do it without your help. If you wish to donate your time as a volunteer, fill out the applicable form on our Applications tab. You can volunteer for TNR work, for adoption events, or even as a foster home. We are looking for volunteers in the following areas: Marionville, Billings, Crane, Aurora, Monett, and Mount Vernon, MO. If you live far away but still want to help stray cats in your area, contact us and we can assist you in finding or setting up a program.
Finally, no cat rescue can function without adopters! If you are looking for a new family member, we always have plenty to pick from. Barn cats are also often available.
